We went over the track line by line and Boxguts provided the basis for the other character and the murder narrative. We created a shot list prioritizing any literal interpretations the cartoony violence that is emblematic of Box’s style.
I then split the shot list up into scenes, starting with two masters: the desk scene and the Green Door Studio scene with Kanga.
Based on locations, wardrobe and setups, I quantified it to 9 scenes with multiple setups to make 34 shots total.
I shot it with two Sony A7S3’s in S-LOG3, DCI4K 240 Mbps as well as some higher bitrate slow mo shots. After multiple takes of the 34 shots, I had a lot of footage to chew through in Premiere. I proxy’d the footage and created multi-cam sequences for each scene. I treated all the takes as alternate camera angles in the multi-cam sequences, then I added the other scenes as video layers. Then I was ready to edit.
I activated the track with the multi-cam sequence I wanted to edit and mapped the nine angles to the number keys and selected the best shot for the moment in real-time, then went back and tweaked the timing of the cut to be on beat, etc. Then when we had the nested sequences ready to composite, like the outer space, time warp and wig scenes, I did them one at a time in AfterEffects.
